Tom Joad's Clawhammer Banjo Tablatures
Editor' Note:For several years, Chris Erswell, a UK folk musician, was active in Internet folk circles, including the "Banjo Hangout." He often shared information, including the content on this page, under the name "Tom Joad," named for the fictitious hero of The Grapes of Wrath. Unfortunately, circumstances caused him to stop updating these pages several years ago, and the site subsequently went down. We used to link to Chris' pages from this web site, and we have heard the dismay of readers who could no longer access Chris' files. So we sought permission to restore what we could, and this is the result. About the Missing MIDI files - Chris originally included midi files generated from the Tab generator program he used (TablEdit), but those files have been lost. Since MIDI files tend to sound pretty bad on most people's computers, I don't think too many people will miss them. If you are a registered user, you can generate your own, simply by opening TEF file and clicking File /Export to MIDI. If you are not a registered TablEdit user, you can still listen to the tab using the TablEdit player. About MP3 Files - A harder task was tracking down .mp3 files that Chris recorded to go along with these tabs. Fortunately, he had stored most of them on another site, and we've been able to recover quite a few. If you have any of the content that Chris generated that we are missing, please let me know. - Paul Race Please note: the freeware TEFView TablEdit file viewer program is needed to read the TablEdit files on this page. TablEdit files play the tune and show the tablature together and are extremely useful for learning new tunes and how to read tablature. And for musicians wishing to create their own tablatures, I also enthusiastically recommend the full version of this software. Creative Commons LicenseTom Joad's audio, midi, video, tablature and other works on the World Wide Web are distributed with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License. Click here for the details. This means, for example, that any person can download and improve on the above tablatures and post them on the Web so long as they are published with an identical license. Perhaps add some interesting variations on the tune? Simplify an awkward part? Or just add some changes that make the tune flow more smoothly. Similarly, it means that the mp3s can be downloaded and used in a larger project. This could be adding a guitar or fiddle track to one of the banjo tunes to enhance the sound.
