The Green Fields of America was founded in the late 1980s by Mick Moloney and included, in addition to Moloney himself, Seamus Egan, Robbie O'Connell, Jimmy Keane and Eileen Ivers.

During its short lifespan the band offered an opportunity for people to hear two of the greatest Irish style banjo players performing together, and it was also the beginning of the long and fruitful cooperation between Egan and Ivers.
