You can think of the mandolin-banjo as a small tenor banjo or as a mandolin with an unusual sound. In Celtic music it doesn't make much difference since those two instruments are usually played much the same way. Michael Gaffney is the best known Irish style mandolin-banjoist and he played plain fiddle style just as he did on the tenor and the mandolin.

If you want to do something different, the dulcimer style seems to work very well on the mandolin-banjo, perhaps better than on the tenor. Harp style and guitar style are less suitable, but can still be worth trying.


Accompaniment

Basic
strumming rhythms can be very effective on the mandolin-banjo, other accompaniment techniques perhaps less suitable.
