There have been many approaches to making a bass banjo throughout the years. Some have been "double bass" type upright instruments - often with huge drums, other have been inspired by the bass guitar. I even know of people who have made their own bass banjo by attaching a bass guitar neck to a snare drum!

The bass banjo is more properly considered as a bass instrument rather than a solo or chord instrument. The only that is regularly manufactured today, the Goldtone Banjo Bass produces a tone uncanningly similar to an acoustic double bass from an instrument as compact and playable as an electric bass. It's actually a very usueful instrument for all kinds of acoustic band music.

Of course the Irish never was much into bass instrument of any kind, but if you need an acoustic bass and if you like the way it look (some they do and some they don't) you really can't make a much better choice.
