Solo playing

Straight
melodic solo playing can work well on the banjolele. There are two problems though, the common banjolele tunings aren't that suitable for single note playing and the instrument can be a bit too soft to be heard properly. Maybe it's better to think of the banjolele as a tool for adding some extra colour to another solo instrument rather than as a soloist on its own.

Dulcimer style soloing may be a better idea at least if you are prepared to do some retuning. But the banjolele's lack of power might still be a problem especially in a larger band.

Accompaniment

Basic
strumming on the banjolele can be extremely effective. But again, it's the volume problem and you might want to add another chord instrument to the mix to get enough power.
