| | The resonator catches the sound from the backside of the head and reflects it forward. It also keeps the sound from being damped by the banjoist's body (especially important if you - like me - are equipped with lots of dampening material. ;-) The resonator greatly increases the loudness of the banjo and is nearly always used in ensembles. But some people prefer the gentles sound of the open backed banjo, and there's also the backplate compomise solution. It's relatively easy to convert a banjko between openback and resonator. All you have to do is remove four or five screws. (And if your banjo doesn't already have a resonator, you can buy one spearately.) Not something you'd want to do live on stage, but it only takes a few minutes.
