The backplate was a simplified variant of the resonator concept: just a plate covering the back of the pot, shielding the sound from being dampened by the player's body and providing a bery slight amount of resonator effect.

This idea never really caught on. Banjoists tended to prefer either a open back or a "proper" resonater to this intermediate solution. A few banjos with backplates were manufactured during the 1920s and 1930s, then it vanished.

<Adding a backplate to an open backed banjo offers some interestign tonal opportunities and isn't that difficult, so you may want to try it.
