 On its own the banjo rim is not able to withstand the pressure from the strings for long. It needs some support.

On older banjos there is a dowel stick a piece of wood running inside the pot from the tailpiece to the neck bracing the rim.

Modern banjos use a adjustable metal rim rod instead. On high-end instruments you usually find a double rim rod (also called "coordination rods") for even more strength and adjustments.
