Schottische - or ecossaise as they say in France - means scottish dance, but it's all fake really. Everything from Scotland was very chic in Paris around 1800 so they came up with this special dance that was supposed to sound scottish.

Ironically, the dance did eventually make it's way to it's assumed home country and the rest of the British isles. In reality the Scottish as played in Ireland is virtually indistinguishable from the Fling.
