Mickey McKenna was born in Trim, Co Meath to a musical family to a musical family that also included two other great tenor banoists, Barney Mckenna and Seán Óg

He used to play in the Lighouse in Howth and also took part in the Green Linnet tour along with his cousin and close friend, Barney.
For the most part he kept a low profile however, and very few were lucky enough to hear his excellent skills both as a Celtic traditional musician and as a jazz musician on the tenor banjo and tenor guitar.
