 Although he probably didn't play Irish music (at least not to any great extent), Irish-descended Joel Walker Sweeney (1810-1860) deserves mentioning here as the first documented white banjo player in history. Along with Dan Emmet he was also instrumental in introducing the banjo to the British Isles during his tours in his ancestors' country.
