Let's try to clear up some name confision right away: The peghead on a banjo is what guitarists, mandolinists etc usually call the head, while the head on the banjo is what's usually called the top on other stringed instruments.

The peghead is simply there at the end of the neck just so we can have a place to put the tuners. Its design hardly affects the sound of the banjo. It's vital for the looks though, and that's important too after all.
