They give these little pdfs away to get your e-mail address, but sometimes there are nuggets.

Courtney Gallagher, Membership and Marketing Coordinator for Boston's Club Passim says, “If you don’t have a website that makes it easy for me, I am going to have to move on to the next artist.”

This is a quite in an article that CD Baby reposted, about what makes a good Indie artist web site, all good advice IMHO.

Also a VERY brief article about trademarks and copyright.

Take it from a person who has had trademarks and even domain names usurped by unscrupulous folks, this is a good thing to pay attention to.

An article about how relatively unknown independents should NOT follow recent examples of Beyonce and Taylor Swift:

Basically it has to do with the whole "secret release" or "exclusive release" stunts they can pull that get a lot of buzz and help them sell their albums. But my albums have always been "secret releases," and not on purpose. Why doesn't the promotional techniques that worked for Taylor work for me?

the difference between friends and fans.

The author makes a good point about the difference between people who support your music because of you and people who support you because of your music. Never take the former for granted.

Rob Filomena video on "What is Music Publishing?" from CD Baby. Describes various ways your songs should earn income. It's a VERY short overview, designed to make you watch the CD Baby videos that promote services you can pay for, but it's something.

Back when I was in my 20s, we had to get all of our information out of books. And the books that were the best and most useful cost real money and were reprinted every time the copyright law or something would change. "This Business of Music" was the best, but things have changed so much in the music industry since 2007, it seems to have permanently gone out of print. Nowadays we get snippets, and there ARE resources, online and in print. But at least you don't have to fork over a week's wages to get the only resource available like we used to do. :-)

CD Baby's free guides to "Touring as an Indie," "Getting Radio Airplay," and Getting your Music Noticed:

As always, they're not very thick or deep, but most acts will ignore most of the tips anyway, which gives those of you who pay attention to such things an edge. Best of luck,

Paul
