A banjo roll (analagous to a drum roll, I suppose) is sequence of four to eight quick notes that are repeated over and over again to build out the song. Like the plain, boring Lego blocks, you won't have a complete structure without a bunch of identical building blocks. But nobody says you have to use the same exact roll on every measure of every song. In fact, once you get into playing melodies, sometimes you can get the melody notes you need just by changing out the roll.
