A reader writes: Hi, I enjoyed reading your buying tips for mountain dulcimers and agree with all your points. I recently purchased a McSpaden and am very happy with it. However, I needed another instrument to play when I visited my daughter in Seattle and didn't want to spend a lot of money on it. I couldn't find anything used in my price range (cheap) and I ended up buying a cardboard dulcimer kit from Backyard Music. It was easy and fun to build and actually sounds pretty good, much better than expected! (But you definitely need to upgrade to include the doubled first string and the 6.5 fret.) It's fine for keeping up with my music while I'm visiting, often for several weeks at a time. I wondered if you had any experience with these and what you thought of them? ------------------------ I just bought a cheap hand-made 60s dulcimer for the same reason. At an online auction for $30. It needs work, though. Maybe removing the frets and resanding the fingerboard. Sometimes I get bargains, sometimes I get what I paid for. Glad the cardboard one is working out for what you need it for. No experience with those myself. Best of luck, Paul |
