Tenor Banjos
17-19 fret 4-string banjos tuned like violas made barre chords in weird keys easier for jazz and Dixieland players of the early 20th century. They still have following inside an outside of traditional jazz playing. |

Irish Banjos
During the Folk Revival in the US and the Skiffle movement in the UK, the banjo became a staple of acoustic Irish music. Though 5- and 6-string banjos occasionally appear, the 4-string banjo, tuned an octave down from a mandolin, is the most common configuration. Tips, discussion, etc. |

Six-String Banjos
This century-old traditional jazz banjo has resurfaced as a supposedly easy way for guitar players to "learn" banjo. But you can't play it like a five-string banjo, and if you try to play it like a guitar, you'll probably just make a lot of noise. It is its own instrument. Tips, discussions, etc. |
